Magic Leap

Magic Leap. (I am sure you have seen the video)

China Alibaba has invested $793.5M into it. Many people are talking about it at the market here.

So what exactly is Magic Leap. It's actually advance AR. It says below. (The concept sounds freaky to me though.)

Magic Leap is a US startup company that is working on a head-mounted virtual retinal display which superimposes 3D computer-generated imagery over real world objects, by projecting a digital light field into the user's eye. It is attempting to construct link

From observation from the market. Animation for Traditional tv, IP TV, Cables market might be affected. Audience will watch less TV. They are very sophisticated these days. Hence tv licensing fee will continue to drop further. It no longer covers even 1/2 of the production cost. In order to survive, producers need to start thinking of more innovative ideas.

It's like how cables (Cartoon Network, Disney and Nickelodeon) first came out. How it kills the Sat morning cartoon in the US.

Believe we have reached the next phase of change. That is using new technologies like 3DS, autostereo, AR, VR etc to tell story in order to engage more sophisticated audience.

Make no mistake. I am not saying that we should focus on technology (which worries me that Singapore next 10 years plan for the sector seems to focus only on technology) It's about how creative you are to monitor new trends and technologies. And apply your creativity to integrate these technologies to create an engaging product.

This is especially important for those doing degrees in the CG field. If we want to compete and move up globally. The winner will be those who can create an innovative entertaining product. Not just being a foot solider, doing low lever cg work.

Moving forward. If Singapore wants to continue to excel in this sector. We need to rethink of our strategy. It's not just about technology. But an integration of Arts and Technology to meet the business goal. Exciting times.
